Eating disorders are complex diseases, and they do not exist in a vacuum. National surveys estimate that as many as 20 million women and 10 million men will struggle with an eating disorder at some point in their lives.
About This Year’s Awareness Week
Eating Disorders Awareness Week is an international awareness event, fighting the myths and misunderstandings that surround anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and OSFED. This year, National Eating Disorders Awareness week is February 25, 2019 through March 3, 2019.
This year’s theme, Come As You Are, highlights the National Eating Disorder Association’s (“NEDA”) movement toward inclusivity among the eating disordered community at large. Efforts will be geared toward the association’s overarching goal of unifying the field of eating disorders. In particular, the message Come As You Are wants to send to individuals is that their stories are valid, no matter what stage of body acceptance they are at. NEDA’s goal is that the conversations about eating disorders will expand to encompass those who are not often told and/or whose stories have not been widely recognized.
