Lisa Kantor was selected as an Attorney of the Year, in San Francisco legal newspaper The Recorder’s third annual list, recognizing the significant accomplishments of California attorneys who made headlines in 2011 for notable achievements in court or on a major deal. Ms. Kantor was honored for her win in the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of client Jeanene Harlick, whom Blue Shield denied benefits for treatment in a residential facility. The court ruled that under California’s Mental Health Parity Statute, California insurers must cover all medically necessary treatment for the nine mental health conditions the parity statute enumerates, including bulimia and anorexia. Ms. Kantor is among only 30 other lawyers chosen to receive the award for their exemplary work in 2011. Ms. Kantor is gratified to receive the recognition as she continues the battle against insurers, demanding that they take responsibility and provide coverage for residential treatment of eating disorders. Keep an eye out for Lisa’s well deserved profile in the February 20th edition of The Recorder.
