Nearly 10% of Americans develop some form of eating disorder within their lifetime. These disorders are also incredibly dangerous, directly causing more than 10,000 deaths each year. In addition, around 26% of people with eating disorders attempt suicide.

Eating disorders can affect anyone, regardless of age, size, gender, race, sexuality, ability, and more. The most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.

Other eating disorders include: avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, rumination disorder, pica, and other specified feeding or eating disorder, and unspecified feeding or eating disorder.

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (#NEDAwareness) aims to raise awareness about eating disorders and support those affected by them. This year National Eating Disorders Awareness Week will be celebrated and recognized from February 22-28, 2021. The goal of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is to shine the spotlight on eating disorders by educating the public, spreading a message of hope, and putting lifesaving resources into the hands of those in need.

This year’s theme is “Every Body Has a Seat at the Table.” According to the NEDA website, “In a field where marginalized communities continue to be underrepresented, we welcome conversations on raising awareness, challenging systemic biases, and sharing stories from all backgrounds and experiences.”
