Insurance Advocate Kathleen MacDonald To Receive Kirsten Haglund Foundation Advocacy Award

Kantor & Kantor, LLP is proud to announce that Insurance Advocate Kathleen MacDonald has been recognized for her outstanding advocacy work and activism in the eating disorders community. A cherished part of Kantor & Kantor's team, MacDonald is well-versed in the education and prevention of eating and body image issues, as well as policy relating to eating disorders and mental health parity. MacDonald will be honored by the Kirsten Haglund Foudnation at the 2013 Celebration Of Life Auction and Gala on Friday April 26, 2013.

MacDonald is a nationally recognized expert in the education and prevention of eating and body image issues, as well as policy relating to eating disorders and mental health parity. MacDonald draws much of her strength, sensitivity, and compassion from her own illness and recovery journey, which plagued her for more than half her life. She is now fully recovered from chronic dieting, anorexia, bulimia, EDNOS, exercise bulimia, disordered eating, and body image issues and remains devoted to teaching others that they too can recover.

In 2004, MacDonald partnered with The Gail R. Schoenbach F.R.E.E.D. Foundation (For Recovery and Elimination of Eating Disorders) as Education and Prevention Coordinator, and Insurance and Patient Advocate. As a lead expert, she helped research and develop the "Education and Prevention" section of The FREED Act (The Federal Response to Eliminating Eating Disorders), the first comprehensive federal bill to address Eating Disorders, and is responsible for the inclusion of the Patient Advocacy section. In 2008, MacDonald became Policy Assistant for the Eating Disorders Coalition.

Since 2012, MacDonald has been a powerful and indispensable addition to Kantor & Kantor, LLP. Her knowledge of eating disorders and passion for mental health parity has made her a tremendous resource for our firm and our clients. Her own recovery has made her acutely aware of the many obstacles and barriers to insurance coverage for treatment, and has inspired her dedication and support to ensure that others have full access to their insurance benefits to receive the treatment they need and deserve.

MacDonald is a frequent speaker at national eating disorders conferences and on college campuses around the country. She has presented at a Congressional Briefing on Capitol Hill regarding the need for federal policy recognizing eating disorders as a public health crisis and at a number of national policy conferences. For her work, MacDonald received numerous accolades, including the Community Partner Award from Michigan's Community Mental Health Services and the Eating Disorders Coalition's Action Award. Her recovery story was featured in the documentary "Made Over in America.
